What is the "x" in "x64"
I have Win7 Ultimate, 64-bit. I noticed that on one of my disks I have drivers in a folder labeled Win7_64 and in another labeled Win7_x64. What is the difference, and which one am I?Gary Burton

If you've spotted this in the folder structure this is just the naming that the driver vendor has used. Sometimes the 64-bit platform is referred to as "64-bit", "64", "x64" and sometimes "AMD64".Blogging about Windows for IT pros at www.theexperienceblog.com

if you type echo %windir% in a command window, youll get your current windows folder. why you have 2 folders though i don't know. sometimes the x is used to destinct between 64bit extension for the 32 bit cpus and (without x) the 64 bit technology used in the itanium cpus, though that is nothing that would be used in win7

The different folders were not on my hard disc, but on my MB CD, which installs to several OS's. I believe, however, that you are correct because one of the filenamess in the Win7_64 folder ends in "_IA64" ThanksGary Burton
